High-Velocity Low-Amplitude Techniques

High-Velocity Low-Amplitude Techniques

This is a masterclass with a primary focus on the axial spine, thorax and pelvis. As a “tour-de-force” of HVLA techniques, there will be attention to the pragmatic principles of techniques and the adaptation of this to various treatment positions of the patient.

Techniques will include combined leverage and thrust (CLT), minimal leverage and thrust (MLT) and short lever thrust (SLT) with an emphasis on patient and operator comfort, as well as efficiency and safety in applying the principles to different patients. The course will include discussions on safety and precautions on when to, and not to, apply HVLA techniques. The course will also include a review of proposed mechanisms of action to highlight the role of HVLA techniques in patient care.

After the completion of the course the participant should:

  • Feel comfortable applying both combined leverage and thrust, minimal leverage and thrust, and short lever thrust to patients in different positions.
  • Feel comfortable adapting patient positioning, operator positioning and ergonomics, handling, localization of leverages and barriers and application of forces when using HVLA techniques.
  • Feel comfortable applying the principles of HVLA to the difficult junctional areas of the axial spine and pelvis.
  • Be able to integrate knowledge of patient safety when applying HVLA techniques in different clinical presentations.
  • Have an understanding of possible mechanisms of action with HVLA techniques.
